Standing Forward Fold

Uttanasana

Standing Forward Fold is the fold over your legs that opens and closes every sun salutation. It stretches the backs of the legs and lets the head and neck hang and release.

How to do Standing Forward Fold

  1. Stand with your feet about hip distance apart.
  2. Hinge from your hips and fold forward over your legs.
  3. Bend your knees as much as you need.
  4. Hold your ankles or calves, or rest your hands on the floor or blocks.
  5. Draw your elbows out to the sides and let the crown of your head move toward the floor.
  6. Let each exhale take you a little deeper.

Common mistakes

  • Forcing the legs straight and rounding hard through the low back.
  • Holding tension in the neck instead of letting the head hang.

Make it easier

  • Keep a big bend in your knees and rest your torso on your thighs.
  • Place your hands on blocks or on your shins.
