Skandasana

Skandasana

Skandasana, which Erin usually calls side lunge, is a deep lunge out to the side with the other leg straight and the toes pointing up. It stretches the inner thigh and hamstring of the straight leg and works mobility in the hips and ankles.

How to do Skandasana

  1. Start in a wide stance with your toes turned out a little.
  2. Bend one knee deeply and shift your hips toward that side.
  3. Straighten the other leg and flex the foot so the toes point up.
  4. Keep your hands on the floor for support, or bring them to your heart.
  5. Move slowly from side to side.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the bent knee cave in.
  • Forcing the heel of the bent leg down when it wants to lift.

Make it easier

  • Keep your hands on the floor or on blocks.
  • Do not lower as far.
